The Importance of Hotel Lighting - Setting the Scene in the Hospitality Industry

Visualise the reception areas of some of the world’s most famous hotels and it is the lighting that creates one of the biggest impacts. From traditional establishments with opulent crystal chandeliers, modern venues with dazzling pendant lights, and minimalist hotels with concealed lights in and around the welcome desk, hotel lighting sets the scene.

No matter how many rooms you have, from the moment your guests walk into reception, commercial lights make that all important first impression. If you want to wow your guests with grandeur or create a relaxed atmosphere at the flick of a switch, your choice of illuminations makes a huge difference to the way your guests view your establishment. And ultimately, the right choice of lighting makes your venue memorable.

However, it is not just the hotel foyer and welcome desk where hotel lighting makes a difference. Commercial lighting also adds to the atmosphere in all the rooms-the bedrooms, bathrooms, restaurants, bar area, conference rooms, corridors, lifts, stairways, function rooms and ballroom.

Whether you require grand ceiling lights, contemporary pendant lights, flush lights, wall lights, traditional side lights, bathroom lighting, or alcove lighting, Angelo’s are the experts in the field of commercial lights. We have hundreds of hotel fixtures and fittings, including outdoor lighting and decorative side lamps, for you to choose from. And, if you can’t find what you need in our showroom, we also create bespoke shades to fit perfectly with the decor of your hotel.

Here are some of the ways that hotel lighting can help set the scene in the hospitality industry:

Hotel Foyer Lighting - Hotel reception lighting creates an instant wow factor. Some of the world’s top hotels, such as the Burj Al Arab in Dubai and the Beverley Wilshire in Los Angeles, have incredible feature lighting in the foyer that puts visitors in immediate awe of their surroundings. And, in the world of internet bookings, pictures speak a thousand words and can make a huge difference to whether or not a customer chooses to stay. Even in the smaller and less luxurious hotels - ones that are not four, five or, in the case of the Burj Al Arab, seven star-your choice of lighting will make guests feel they are in exceptional surroundings from the moment they walk in. Hotel foyer lighting does not just include ceiling lights, but also lighting in and around the welcome desk, in the alcoves and seating areas.

Bedroom Lighting - Guests use their bedrooms primarily in the evenings and at night time so bedroom lighting should be layered so guests can transform their space into a comfortable, relaxed and even romantic environment. The room should not be too bright so it is uncomfortable for guests, or so dim that people can’t see to get dressed or to groom themselves. After all, lighting can sometimes make the difference between a good or bad review. It may sound obvious, but it is also important that the switches are situated in places for ease of use. Angelo's sells a wide range of hotel bedroom and bathroom lighting including ceiling lights, wall lights, bedside lights, mirror lighting, and also task lighting for desks and seated zones.

Restaurant Lighting - Just as in the bedroom, restaurant lighting should create a comfortable and relaxed environment with flattering illuminations to make diners feel at ease. Elegant wall lighting, candles and candelabras, and well placed ceiling lights (including spot lighting) all add to the atmosphere. Some hotels have centrepieces in the restaurant, such as a fish tank, fountain, or sculpture, and lighting will help draw attention to this central point. The breakfast area is usually a much brighter dining space with well lit self-service zones and buffet tables. This is because guests will usually want to eat their breakfast in a shorter space of time. So, if the restaurant also doubles up as a breakfast area, your choice of lighting should reflect this.

Hallway Lighting - The lighting in corridors and hallways are generally functional, but also help to contribute to the beauty of the interior and here lighting can be layered to create interest. Although hotel lighting is usually dimmer and more flattering in the bedrooms and restaurants, it can be brighter in the communal areas, for safety purposes, and also for directional use, to guide people to the right areas. Task lighting such as side lamps and table lights are ideal for seated areas including library corners and hallway seats, where guests chat, or wait for their family to arrive so they can walk on through together to the restaurant or bar area.

Angelo's Lighting sell a wide range of indoor and outdoor lighting for hotels, including for the foyer, bars, restaurants, conference and seminar rooms, corridors, lifts, stairways, bedrooms, suites, bathroom areas, kitchens, offices, gym, swimming pool and spa. We also sell a full range of outdoor and security lighting. Just click on the link above to discover where you can find our London lighting showroom.
