A Busy Person's Guide to Creating a Party Atmosphere at Christmas

  • Living Room Lighting - If you have guests over for Christmas and want to make your environment more festive, but are pressed for time, contemporary table lamps or floor lamps can provide the answer. Choose shades in white, reds, greens or gold, or have table lamps with drop crystals that sparkle to help set the mood and get people into the party-spirit. Table lamps are a safer option than candles, especially if there are going to be lots of young children about!
  • Hallway Lighting - Another way to make your home cosy at Christmas is to position contemporary table lamps or a floor lamp in the hallway. Two matching lamps on a side table looks wonderful in this space or place a floor lamp in a corner by the door. If you keep the hallway lights on as you welcome guests, this will make your interior instantly inviting.
  • Dining Room Lighting - Contemporary lighting not only sets the mood, but also adds depth and warmth to a space. Put two matching lamps on a console table in the dining room to make this room glow during Christmas dinner and to create an environment your guests will love spending time in. Your choice of lighting does not have to be seasonal. For a timeless look, go for minimalist lighting in materials such as chrome, or aluminium, or opt for pale or neutral colours such as white, creams, greys and beige that will fit in with almost any colour scheme.
  • Accent Lighting - Contemporary lighting can also be used to focus on a specific area for your home, such as certain decorations you want to highlight – a contemporary Christmas tree for instance, or a nativity display.
  • Fairy Lights - Buy some fairy lights to put around your banisters so they can be seen by guests as soon as they walk in through the door. Decorating is all in the detail, so rather than opting for quantity and buying lots of decorations for your home, a few well placed decorations can create just as good results.
  • Xmas Trees Made Easy - If you are thinking of having a Christmas tree, but don't have the time to shop for decorations, the quickest option is to choose free standing metal trees in gold or silver (you can get other colours too) or buy a decorative wrought iron tree that you can hang on a wall or on the side of a door. These look pretty and elegant and you don't have to decorate them!
  • Xmas Wreaths - Hang a wreath outside your door or use it on your dining room table to make a pretty centre-piece. It is simple to make a wreath but, if you don't have the time to do this, you can buy one from your local garden centre or florist. Choose one with natural foliage or permanent ones that can be stored in the attic ready to take out and display every year.
  • Saving Space with Cards - An easy way to decorate your home is to hang your cards on string or ribbon and this will keep your surfaces free. You can either hang your cards vertically, using clothes pegs or dress pins to position them in place, or string the ribbon across the wall horizontally and hang your cards over the top.
  • Table Dressing - Make sure your table is set beautifully to welcome guests. Include place mats, place names, crackers, napkins (with festive napkin rings if possible) and good quality crockery and glassware. If you don't want to go all out and buy lots of things for your table, just tie a red ribbon around each napkin and create a centre-piece such as a glass bowl filled with colourful baubles. Feel free to be as creative as you like.
