How to Create a Beautiful Outdoor Space with Garden Lighting

How you design your outdoor space will make a real difference to how you use it; a more attractive area will tempt you to spend more time in the garden and the importance of garden lighting in achieving this shouldn’t be overlooked.

Whether you have a cottage garden, a small courtyard garden, or maybe even large terraces complete with a swimming pool and tennis courts, outdoor lights are a factor which can make or break this space.

The right choice of lighting will brighten up your back yard and add to the aesthetics of this whole area. Whether you want to illuminate your pathway, or have uplighters spotlighting a favourite tree or lightening up the flower beds, you will get real satisfaction from choosing the right lighting for your outdoor space.

Choose the right types of lighting and you’ll find yourself using the garden more, not only during the summer months but throughout the year. On spring and summer evenings, for instance, you may want to invite your friends and family round for a barbecue. Even in the winter, if you have a patio heater, you will enjoy relaxing outside on milder evenings with your loved ones.

Angelo's, in north London, have a great range of outdoor lights and we have drawn up some top tips on how to transform your outdoor space with garden lighting.

The Cottage Garden - A cottage garden is an endlessly versatile plot which can weave in all kinds of elements depending on your own tastes and personality. This type of garden began to flourish in Elizabethan times for growing flowers, vegetables, herbs and also plants for medicinal purposes. You could choose different garden lighting ideas to emphasise your plot's rustic and rural qualities, for instance wall lights in alcoves in brick walls, shining through your wisteria or jasmine, or uplighters to spotlight a fruit tree or pretty flower beds with colourful and fragrant plants such as sweet peas and climbing roses. Lanterns and lamp-posts, perhaps with a wrought iron effect for a sense of tradition, are also very English and will help to give your outdoor space a cottage garden feel.

The Courtyard Garden - Courtyard gardens are especially popular in towns, making the most of limited outdoor space. Again, wall lights will beautify this space and they will look especially stunning if you have an outdoor eating area. You might want a fountain or water feature for this area and casting some light on it will make the effect much more striking. If you have a patio or decking area in your courtyard, then you may want to choose patio lighting for this space. Fairy lights are another option for this area and will make your garden look magical. Also think about uplighters with different coloured filters, highlighting your carefully-chosen plants, so that you can create a great atmosphere for your own urban mini-oasis, which will be ideal for entertaining friends.

Terrace Garden - Pathway lighting could be the best choice for this type of area, perhaps with solar powered light stakes to light up the path on a dark night. Steplights, either attached to a wall or recessed in your garden's brickwork, are also a good choice for terraces and paths, while traditional English lamp-posts are another option to consider. You could also put lights under pagodas to make a beautiful garden feature, or add a touch of antique ambience with a lantern. And, if you have a pond, you will want to light up this feature, so you can make the most of it all year round.

Sweeping Lawns - Driveway lights that are automatically triggered when something passes not only look pretty, but they are also great to have for security purposes. Low-energy spotlights can make the most of your garden's features as well as warning off any would-be intruder. Pathway lighting also looks attractive and prevents your family or guests from falling over during a walk at night. If you have a large garden with facilities such as a tennis court, then you will want to light up this area so you can play tennis in the evenings and, if you have swimming pool, again, lighting up both the pool and the surrounding area is a must so that you can use them after dark.
